Historical background
The house is part of the estate, which since 1897 belonged to Mikhail Ivanovich Kartashev, a peasant of the Yekaterinburg district, a member of the City Duma (from 11/22/1906,
1907 – 1916). The main house was built in 1911 – 1912.
In 1928, the estate occupied an area stretched deep into the block, measured by the firewall wall that delimited adjacent areas, stretching for 56 meters, and along Irkutsk Street (now Chelyuskintsev Street) the estate occupied 34 meters.
The estate was a complex of residential buildings and a number of outbuildings, now lost, except for the wing located at street
Chelyuskintsev, 5.
Mikhail Ivanovich led an active social life. He was a city appraiser, a member of the Board of trustees of the city college, a member of the commission for the evaluation of commercial premises on the Market Square, a member of the city Council, chairman of the Council of elders of the Social Club, a member of the commission on the regulation of the Market Square, treasurer of the city council and even a member of the commission for the selection of a place for an apiary of Beekeeping societies.
Description
The two-storey wooden building with two different-sized risalites fully meets the artistic requirements of its time and stands out with original Art Nouveau techniques that have no analogy in other buildings of the city.
Its expressiveness is achieved by the emphasized texture of the facades, created by the natural plasticity of previously unshaped log walls, enlarged windows and, most importantly, the powerful «stalactite» shape of the cornice, made of thick bars.
The decorative design of the roof canopy over the balcony, as well as the fencing of the balcony itself, is also decided in the form of a frequent series of «stalactites», forming a juicy architectural detail on the wall.
Having abandoned the traditional carved decoration, the architects showed a special attitude to the material itself, revealing and emphasizing the decorative possibilities of the wooden structure.
The rounded outlines of the roof and the plasticity of all exterior surfaces allow specialists to classify this building as «Scandinavian» («northern») Art Nouveau, which Russian architects were fond of at the beginning of the last century, especially those who belonged to the St. Petersburg school.
